Leave it up to the voters, I think. Mandatory retirement is a limitation of voter choice.
Rather than pegging it to a mere number, perhaps they should be required to pass regular medical/psychiatric reviews to ensure they're still fit to function. Even that, though, is tricky; I had a very old professor who'd suffered a stroke, and while it'd left him with (as one of my classmates put it) "a load-screen", he nevertheless had all his marbles until his dying day.
Agreed. Age isn't a proxy for judgment. I'd rather have someone 80 and sharp than 40 and clueless. Though I'd take either over 80 and clueless.
