After Wall Street's worst day in months, are investors right to worry that Big Tech is overspending on AI?

“None of the answers are what I would consider to be, "correct". I don't think this platform is all that useful for actual serious matters unfortunately. As a tool LLMs are very valuable. The most likely outcome is that one large company will end up "owning" the profitable part of this space. This is how the rise of the internet played out with Google owning advertising ie the thing that made money. Or the rise of social media with Facebook owning the profitable part of that. Everyone else will go out of business and be about as memorable in the future as DEC,, Alta Vista, and Friendster. So the logical thing to do if you are OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Google, etc. Take out every loan you can build build build. Everyone but the eventual winner will lose EVERYTHING. So the vast bulk of that investment will indeed be lost. There's still unlit fiber in silicon Valley from the 2001 crash and most of the players from then are gone. Google though made trillions” — Dense1

Is it better to rent or to own your home?

“It depends on a great number of circumstances, some personal, some federal monetary policy. I have a mortgage at about 3%. Given the inflation rate I am borrowing that money for free, even being paid a little to borrow it. I could pay the loan off today but why would I? Owning also allows me to do things that a rental would not. I have a substantial garden and a large shop in my backyard, neither common in rental situations. Rental makes sense for people who are likely to change jobs or move as their job demands change, for those who struggle to accumulate the down payment on a home, or for those who don't want to be bothered with maintenance costs and activities.” — JE_Thomas

Should companies be required to share profits with employees?

“It kind of amazes me that that is not a GIVEN. If most workers are stuck with static wages when a company is enjoying record profits that are only going to a few people, some of whom may not have even actually done anything to have helped acquire those profits, that reeks to me of wage-slavery.” — Scaramouche

Tesla's quarterly operating profit fell 56% as it ramped up spending on AI and robotics — is that the right move for the company?

“It depends on what you mean by, "hurting the business?" Tesla was a hype focused company with poor build quality that exploited an untapped market. Once other manufacturers with better engineering processes moved into that market it began to fail. Now it's flailing at other hype businesses” — Dense1
