Because we should be endeavoring to re-democratize the space program, and that means regaining independence from "private" corporations, even the better ones. This always takes time and struggle, but it can and must be done. Profit-driven space-travel is a NIGHTMARISH idea. Look no further than the Dr. Who episode, "Oxygen".
When those profit-driven companies compete to realize the ambitions set out by that democracy, we're better off. And if those companies choose to pursue their own inspiring objectives in space, even better.
They specifically won't, though, not as long as they're run like totalitarian monarchies.
