Is the federal crackdown on alleged non-citizen voting in California justified, or political overreach?

On Oct. 18–19, 2026, the Justice Department's 'Operation Protect the Vote' charged 28 non-citizens in California — arresting 11 — with illegally registering or voting, and FBI Director Kash Patel said more arrests followed.

I just sat down to look at the morning news. Two stories out of CA in 2 minutes: the Los Angeles registrar admits that in regards to 20,000 flagged as suspect voters, they “have no independent way to verify voter citizenship beyond the voter’s own attestation”, and Tulare county sent out thousands of duplicate mail-in ballots in what “officials have characterized as a printing error.” Yeah, no room to have any doubts about the system here!

The Trump playbook: undermine trust in the process and then claim to be restoring that trust. Good grief. Is anyone still buying this?

If you're picking "political overreach," what would an actual justified version of this crackdown look like to you?
