Was Donald Trump right to put the new Russia sanctions on hold just before they took effect?

On October 16, 2026, President Trump signed an executive order waiving the newly enacted Graham Act sanctions on Russia, citing the national interest, two days before they were due to take effect, as tensions with Ukraine worsened.

I can't think a a single good argument for putting them on hold.

What good argument was there for having them in the first place? This whole Ukraine situation is based on a complete lie. That said, to play devil's advocate, I COULD say that those sanctions have been doing Russia more good than harm! The "Western" imperial-corporate system has become so corrosive that getting kicked out of it is akin to being forced off of heroin.

If you're voting "right call," where's your line — does holding sanctions ever look like leverage for Moscow instead of leverage over it?
