Who else was in the running?

First and foremost, Musk is a technlogist, not a scientist. Second, his strength is in assembling quality teams and driving them hard. The Gordon Gecko "Y'all work real hard and pretty soon this will all be mine" prize would be far more appropriate.

For all his quirks, Elon is an incredible innovator. If you had told me 20 years ago that a single person would successfully take on the space, auto, communications, and AI industries, I'd have never believed it. Credit where credit is due.

I'm unfamiliar with any actual invocations he's produced. I know he invested in and promoted Tesla and SpaceX and various other things but not in anything he's done himself. I may be old fashioned but I feel one should actually have to do some science to win the National Medal of Science.

Those companies wouldn’t be what they are without Musk. He’s a lot more than an investor. He sets extremely ambitious technical goals, recruits the teams, and is famously hands-on in engineering and design decisions. You can debate whether that qualifies as “science,” but I think innovation on that scale merits the medal.

I have yet to meet a single engineer who has worked with him who told me he's anything but a glory seeking blow hard. I will admit I have not met every engineer in silicon valley or in aerospace but I did work in aerospace early in my career and still know a decent number and have been in the valley the last thirty years or so. His, "fame" at being hands on is IMHO no different than the rest of his, and most billionaires, fame ie a well paid publicist
