No change. The security posture of every player in the tech industry for the last 20 years is that they will do the barest minimum on security and accept 0 liability. Pre-LLM we lived in a world where every week we hear about script kiddies breaking into this or that company and stealing data or encrypting it and holding the company hostage. AI has changed NOTHING here. To be fair I am picking on tech here. Corporate liability in general has been in free fall since the rise to dominance of neo-liberalism in the 1980s

Ugh, again with the rotten questions. Adding the caveat, "it was the wrong time", turns it into a maybe which ruins the poll. The answers available now become an unequivocal yes, then maybe, and finally unsure. This is a common tactic in push polling. Though here it appears to just be bad design

We need a way to downvote bad questions like this. The question does not tell me what specific incident they are talking about nor does it present the key facts needed to have an informed opinion. If you get sick from eating a chicken sandwich who is responsible?

None of the answers are what I would consider to be, "correct". I don't think this platform is all that useful for actual serious matters unfortunately. As a tool LLMs are very valuable. The most likely outcome is that one large company will end up "owning" the profitable part of this space. This is how the rise of the internet played out with Google owning advertising ie the thing that made money. Or the rise of social media with Facebook owning the profitable part of that. Everyone else will go out of business and be about as memorable in the future as DEC,, Alta Vista, and Friendster. So the logical thing to do if you are OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Google, etc. Take out every loan you can build build build. Everyone but the eventual winner will lose EVERYTHING. So the vast bulk of that investment will indeed be lost. There's still unlit fiber in silicon Valley from the 2001 crash and most of the players from then are gone. Google though made trillions

They have practically no technology. The methodology to take large training sets and build a model from them is well known. Similar to how the whole world knows how to transform ore into aluminum. The thing they manufacture is very large transformed datasets that are difficult to exfiltrate and not of much value even if you did. In general you can't take a set of weights and biases and somehow reverse engineer something useful from them to make your models magically better This is like asking, "Do nuclear power plants do enough to prevent staff from using the reactor to transform lead into gold and selling it to pawn shops"

There is really no way to know. This is basically gambling. With the Internet we knew it would change the world and be big. What know one knew was how to make big money from it and who would win. It turns out gate kept surveillance capitalism and Google won and made trillions. If "AI" turns out to be amenable to strong gate keeping as advertising did and if Anthropic ends up being the winner then it is severely undervalued right now. If it doesn't then it is was over valued. Without a time machine I see no real way to guess and nothing the companies involved can do but keep doubling down and trying to become the big winner.

The AI writing the responses has a habit of shifting tone from the question. In this case the question asks if this is a breakthrough or a stunt. The responses though equivocates by adding the word "mostly". I'd recommend adding to your prompting "Maintain a constant tone between the question and the responses" and "be direct and do not equivocate in responses avoid words like mostly"

The unpredictability of when terms will end due to death and health coupled with the ability to hold out and step down at the, "right", time for a justices political reasons has lead in part to th mess we are in today. I would prefer the end date of a justices term was well understood and predictable up front.

Wording of the question is a bit awkward and may bias responses. When I read the response, "Depends on the race". My thought was, "Sure, white candidates pitching racist ideas at white voters should prolly stick with Trump"

It depends on what you mean by, "hurting the business?" Tesla was a hype focused company with poor build quality that exploited an untapped market. Once other manufacturers with better engineering processes moved into that market it began to fail. Now it's flailing at other hype businesses

In people who mistakenly believe in AI, "intent", the idea that we can observe them doing this helps them feel we can catch them when they are up to no good. Frankly at this point the divergence between the realities of machine learning and LLMs and the marketing/media/politics of, "AI" or worse, "SI" is so vast as to be meaningless. You'd have better luck trying to understands pendulums by reading Spiderman comics

The whole concept of insurance is that we all pool resources to take a risk together. The more finely we dice these risks the less it becomes shared. Government should take the action to decide where it is safe enough to build, not private for profit industry

This is such a hard one. The Trump administration is doing this as part of its usual grift to push tech barons to bribe it more. At the same time the entire tech industry very much does lie and cheat at every level of the H1B system both to depress wages AND in their treatment of the foreign workers ensnared in it. While I personally advocate for open borders and the free movement of workers and immigrants. The reality is that the skilled visa system is run as a nested series of for profit grifts specifically to enrich ownership at the cost of everyone else :(

I've only been involved with this at Apple and Microsoft but having done time at Amazon I don't have any reason to think it was different there. All of them in my experience break the rules and adhere to a sort of unwritten set of policies and procedures which kinna sorta keep the government from coming down on them. Make no mistake most hiring managers in tech has transgressed, including me, and KNOWS we have done it. But this is just how hiring works in tech and your alternative as a manager is to leave/get fired. It worked that way at Apple, MIcrosoft, Amazon, down to the growing startups.

In the tech industry "unlimited" vacation is an interesting case study. In the olden days companies had defined vacation policies that granted days which one banked. By federal law those were considered to be in lieu money compensation and thus your banked days were owed to you as real money if you left the company. This meant companies had large unfunded liabilities on their books, which they had to account for as operational debt. Instead of a defined days off for hours worked benefit companies instituted various flexible time off policies commonly referred to as unlimited time off. the tldr; being that one could take as much time off as you liked at manager discretion. This had three effects. 1) No unfunded liability on the books. 2) Since most people never took all their time off 1 above leads to a significant real cost savings 3) People took even less time off Defined benefits made time off feel owed vs requested and modern hustle culture and mgmt did the rest

That's an odd definition of "friend" and would tend to leave the US very isolated in the world. In the past such isolation has never played out well

A better question in my opinion is, "will we ever be able to definitively tell if another human is conscious or just a p-zombie?" In current LLMs while the model itself certainly has no persistent consciousness I can imagine there could be a form of transient individual consciousness that exists for a fleeting moment during inference and then is gone forever. We would have no real way of detecting or proving it though and I'm not sure what if any meaning it would have.

The models have not, "advanced beyond our ability to understand them", what's happened is they were giving access to the same sort of scripts script kiddies have been using for decades and more or less told to go wild. This has nothing to do with AI as such and everything to do with the complete lack of accountability we hold corporations to.

This question pre-supposes a magical threat we need to be protected from. There is no such threat. As someone who actually works in AI I no more worry about godlike AIs than I do about the Greek gods coming to smite us for abandoning them

Scaling is fairly predictable as are capabilities. What is harder to predict is long term changes in society due to these tools existing. Those though have nothing to do with AI safety. In reality there is 0 danger of Skynet. All of the real risk is in how the rich will use this tech to further enrich themselves and disenfranchise everyone else.

Quite a bit of software has been written by machine for decades. The abysmal quality of modern software isn't do to an influx of new AI it's due to large companies not being held to account for their failures

How we act towards others, even fictional others, has impacts on our habits. I try to practice manners and compassion whenever possible in the hopes that I will be a better person when it matters

Here's an easy way to understand if the question is asked from dislike or fairness. Do they mention ftm at all? In reality if someone is on any form of testosterone blocker they are at a disadvantage athletically. It's why steroids and other analogs are so tightly controlled. Larger frame or denser bones or whatever sounds good until you realize it's the equivalent of having a big heavy car and replacing the big engine with a much smaller one. FTMs are going the other direction and tend to have some advantages from this hormonal regime.
