Should U.S. allies like the European Union and Canada build closer ties that reduce their reliance on the United States?

At an October 30, 2026 summit in Montréal, the European Union and Canada agreed to deepen cooperation on trade, investment, defense and technology amid tensions with the Trump administration.

Nations need to pursue their national interests. Canada and Europe didn't walk away from the US, the US pushed them away. We are no longer a reliable partner in either commerce or defense. Our erstwhile allies should waste no time making other arrangements.

The question should prolly be phrased as former allies. Trump seems bent on abrogating all of America's traditional aliases

Of course they should. We've given them no choice. Provided we don't continue to alienate our closest allies after 2028, I think there will be some good that comes of it, namely a more balanced global alliance. Just wish we didn't have to be @!&!s to get there.
